The terms “IPO Watch”, “IPO watch”, “IPO WATCH” and similar expressions used on this website are employed only in a generic and descriptive sense, to indicate information, updates and tracking related to Initial Public Offerings (IPOs). These words are not used for the purpose of claiming any exclusive rights, ownership or monopoly over such expressions as a brand name or trademark.
Under Indian trademark law, common, generic and descriptive words cannot ordinarily be monopolised by any single person or entity. As a general principle, descriptive or generic terms that are refused registration may still be used by others in a purely descriptive sense (for example, using “IPO watch” to mean keeping track of IPOs). No person can legitimately claim that “IPO WATCH” is exclusively their brand name or prevent others from using this expression in its ordinary descriptive meaning, because the law does not permit any monopoly over such descriptive terms. This website does not claim any registered or unregistered trademark rights in such generic or descriptive terms.
If, in future, someone makes “IPO WATCH” or a similar combination distinctive by using it with a unique device logo or stylised design and gets that combination registered, they may be able to claim rights over that specific design/combination, but not over the generic words “IPO WATCH” alone.
On 3rd December 2025, I purchased the domain name “ipowatch.co.in” after conducting basic public database checks and not finding any valid registered trademark in force in India for the term ‘IPO WATCH. As per the public records of the Trade Marks Registry, the trademark application “IPO WATCH” (Application No. 5678336) was expressly refused on 18 June 2025, on the ground that the term is descriptive in nature and lacks distinctiveness under Section 9(1)(b) of the Trade Marks Act, 1999. Because this mark was never registered and has been treated as a generic/descriptive expression, no single person or company has been granted a legal monopoly over the words “IPO Watch”, and under Indian law such generic or descriptive terms are generally not protected as exclusive trademarks so that others may use them in their ordinary descriptive sense.
